Factors Influencing the Intention of Continuing Condom Use in Married Women

Abstract
To investigate the factors affecting the intention of using condoms in married Korean women, we analysed the data from the 1997 National Fertility and Family Health Survey conducted by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Among nationally representative sample of 6,450 married women, we collected data for 794 women who currently used condom and aged from 17 to 48 years(mean age of 32.4 years). Multiple logistic regression analyses examined the relationship between the intention of condom use and the selected variables.
62.2 percent of current condom users intended to use condoms continuously in the future and 29.2 percent of women were willing to switch from condoms to another contraceptive methods.
Better educated women were more likely to discontinue using the condoms than less educated women. College graduates were 2.48 times as likely as under middle school graduates to do so. Shorter duration of married life(less then 9 years) were more likely to stop using condoms(Odds ration(OR): 2.03, p<0.01) compared with long-term marriage(10 years and over). The intention of stopping condom use in current condom users was elevated among the users of shorter duration(less than 1 year, OR: 2.35) than those of longer duration(5 years and over).
Having a dissatisfaction toward using condom was significantly associated with future intention of stopping condom use(OR: 16.0). There were significant associations between the future intention of using condoms and reasons for choosing condom use. Having a reason for choosing condom use ¢¥no side effect¢¥ was more likely to practice condoms continuously than other reasons(easy to use, efficacy of contraception and no difficulty in sexual life).
